Building Stairwells: 5 Tips for Clean, Safe Stairs

We walk through them every day without thinking, but stairwells play a double role in a building: they are evacuation routes in an emergency, and they are among the first spaces visitors notice. Dirty or cluttered stairs hurt the building's image — and can become a real hazard.

Here are five tips for clean, safe stairwells.

Tip 1: Disinfect handrails regularly

Handrails are among the most-touched surfaces in the entire building: every resident going up or down puts a hand on them. A weekly disinfecting wipe — ideally built into the stairwell cleaning visit — limits the spread of germs, especially during flu season.

Tip 2: Sweep steps weekly, wash them every two weeks

Dust, sand and small debris collect on steps and in landing corners, making surfaces slippery. Plan a full weekly sweep (steps, landings, corners), and wash the steps every two weeks with a product suited to the flooring.

Pay special attention to stair nosings: that is where dirt embeds itself and wear shows the most.

Tip 3: Keep the stairwell clear at all times

This is a safety issue before it is a cleanliness issue: strollers, bikes, boxes and furniture do not belong in a stairwell. In a fire, any stored object becomes an obstacle to evacuation — and a violation of fire prevention regulations.

Remind residents with posted notices, and systematically report abandoned items to the manager for prompt removal.

Tip 4: Check the lighting on every visit

A poorly lit stairwell is a fall risk. On every cleaning visit, check that all lights work, including emergency lighting. Immediately report burned-out bulbs, faulty motion sensors and dark spots.

A switch or sensor that no longer works is also an unhappy resident's call waiting to happen.

Tip 5: Do not forget walls, ceilings and windows

Cobwebs in the corners, dust on window sills, fingerprints on walls near the handrails: these details betray neglected maintenance. Plan a monthly dusting of walls and ceilings, and clean the stairwell windows twice a year.

One glance upward while climbing the stairs says a lot about a building's maintenance quality.

In short

Disinfected rails, swept and washed steps, a clear stairwell, checked lighting, dusted walls and ceilings: five simple habits that keep your stairs clean, safe and welcoming.

If maintaining your buildings' stairwells takes too much of your team's time, leave it to professionals.
